New grad residency program for nurses
Scholarships available to assist the nurse in pursuing higher education or taking classes related to nursing, to further achievement of professional goals
Scholarschip availability
Up to $5,000 tuition reimbursement available for courses taken outside the institution, or for the pursuit of advanced degrees in the healthcare arena
Specialty certification assistance
Staff members are encouraged to become certified in their specialty, such as oncology certified nurses, med-surg, critical care, and emergency nursing
Tuition reimbursement and loan repayment
Up to $5,000 in tuition loan repayment (pre-tax benefit) after satisfactorily completing six months of employment and when actively paying RN degree student loans (associates or bachelor’s degree in nursing)

Our professional practice
Boston Medical Center (BMC) nurses have developed and adopted a professional practice model that reflects the care the nurses provide to our patients and can be found in all that we do.
Our model provides a unifying framework that captures what matters the most in our nurses’ practice: commitment to patient-centered care, our care delivery model, and shared governance.
Using the patient-centered care model, over 1,700 nurses in our system are driven to prioritize patient needs and demonstrate and deliver exceptional care, without exception on a daily basis.
Emergency department
The Emergency Department at BMC is the tenth busiest ED in the country, treating the highest volume of trauma victims in the city of Boston and throughout New England. As a Magnet-recognized organization, we use a multidisciplinary approach, focused on providing exceptional care, to treat a diverse and complex population. The academic setting promotes professional growth and development within the organization.
Perioperative services
Boston Medical Center is the first New England hospital to offer an Integrative Procedural Platform (IPP) model of total procedural and surgical care for our patients. The combination of state-of-the-art operating rooms, hybrid procedural rooms, and multiple specialized endovascular rooms allows for a comprehensive and dynamic opportunity for teamwork to care for a wide variety of patients. As the busiest Level 1 trauma center in all of New England our physicians, anesthesiologists, nurses, surgical techs, and various support teams work in tandem to strive for clinical excellence, exceptional outcomes, and an excellent and collaborative work environment.
Maternal health
Boston Medical Center is a World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF designated Baby-Friendly hospital. This international award recognizes excellence in lactation support. New mothers and their babies stay together after delivery, in large, comfortable, private rooms to promote a positive and powerful bonding experience.
Medical surgical
Our medical-surgical units serve patients in neurology, infectious disease, renal, family medicine, geriatrics, cardiology, oncology, general surgery, and more. These units continue to improve patient education and decrease readmissions using the teach-back method, whereby the team assess a patient’s understanding of new concepts while preparing them for self-care after discharge. Our medical-surgical nurses bring a wealth of experience and diverse backgrounds to the units as they receive strong support from their directors and unit educators. We welcome experienced acute care nurses as well as candidates from other nursing environments such as acute and sub-acute rehab.
Care management
Our Care Management team develops programs to coordinate patient care and assist them and their families as they navigate the health care system. The team advocates for the needs of patients and families, helping them cope with the emotional impact of illness, negotiating with insurance and managed care companies, conducting discharge planning, and providing other support as needed.
Patient Care Technician
Our patient care technicians work collaboratively with all team members, under the direction of an RN, to provide a variety of support services that meet patient, family, and staff needs. These essential members of the nursing team contribute to the delivery of high-quality patient care by working efficiently and effectively within the operation of the patient care unit. Patient care technicians across the system are dedicated to addressing patient needs including comfort and the distribution of clinical information.
Critical care
Boston Medical Center’s Critical Care Division provides care to some of Boston’s most acute, complex, and vulnerable patients. Nurses are part of a multidisciplinary team that provide exceptional care without exception. They care for patients with complex medical/ surgical needs including, but not limited to, multisystem organ failure, cardiac surgery, stroke, and trauma. The Critical Care Division recognizes the importance of improving the overall health and wellbeing of our nurses, patients and the diverse community we serve. We embrace a diverse workforce to achieve these outcomes and to deliver patient and family centered care.
Ambulatory / outpatient
Our ambulatory/outpatient clinics serve patients in primary care and specialty areas such as gastroenterology, rheumatology, dermatology, pulmonary, pediatrics, geriatrics, infectious diseases, cardiology, hematology/oncology, endocrinology, neurology, renal, podiatry, radiology, surgery, otolaryngology, and OB/GYN. Nurses across our ambulatory clinics demonstrate leadership, collaboration, teamwork, and commitment to improving patient experiences and outcomes in alignment with the overall mission of Boston Medical Center.
