Position: Clinical Laboratory Assistant
Department: Lab Support Services
Schedule: Full Time - Evening (3-11:30pm)

Monitors, maintains, and troubleshoots the laboratory automation and automation lines; performs instrument maintenance as necessary. Serves as a resource on all aspects of the automation systems. Optimizes lab test order entry in the lab information systems, registration, and billing systems as necessary; optimizes the routing and loading of patient specimens to instruments and work benches. Communicates effectively to all levels of lab staff and external contacts on all aspects of the automation lines and specimen handling, processing, and routing.

Under the supervision of laboratory staff, assists with setting up and performing routine experiments and maintaining a safe lab environment. Typical duties include:

  • Prepares reagents for molecular, biochemical, cell culture, or physiological studies.
  • Assists with PCR based assays, cell culture, and protein expression studies.
  • Provides daily care for research animals (mice colonies). Cleans cages and equipment; feeds according to instructions; monitors the health and wellbeing of the animals. Discusses any discrepancy with supervisor or PI.
  • Organizes and prepares research animals for experimental timelines.
  • After training (if necessary) isolates cells from laboratory animals according to established protocols.
  • Maintains clear, concise, accurate and legible records of laboratory work. Labels specimens according to established protocols.
  • Under guidance of laboratory staff and principal investigator, analyzes and interprets results.
  • Works with other researchers to develop and standardize laboratory protocols.
  • Follows standard procedures for specimen storage and shipment. Maintains accurate recordkeeping.
  • Organizes and maintains laboratory equipment and supplies. Responsible for cleaning equipment, dishwashing, and using proper methods for sanitizing, sterilizing and disposing of contaminated laboratory materials.
  • Maintains inventory of supplies; stocks materials for use in the laboratory. Completes requisitions under direction of supervisor.
  • Provides general clerical support including: answering phones, filing, photocopying, faxing, preparing and sending specimens and other packages, maintaining databases, tracking and retrieving reports, etc.
  • Conducts basic library and website reference research.
  • Attends and participates in laboratory meetings and/or committees, as required. Attends all mandatory training sessions.


  • Minimum of a high school diploma or GED.
  • Associates degree or Bachelor's degree in a clinical science is preferred.


  • Minimum of 3 -5 years' experience working in a clinical laboratory environment.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Experience in the workflow in a clinical laboratory with basic knowledge and understanding of laboratory specimen processing and testing.
  • Has experience, or is capable of, performing and reporting waived testing, as defined by CLIA regulations. Has experience, or is capable of, performing preventive maintenance, minor repairs and troubleshooting of lab automation equipment.
  • Demonstrated technical competency using hospital computer systems such as Microsoft Office, patient registration systems (e.g. SDK, etc.) and Laboratory Information Systems (e.g. Sunquest).
  • Excellent English communication skills (oral and written) and interpersonal skills are required to communicate effectively with internal and external contacts in a courteous and customer service manner.
  • Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills; strong attention to detail, organizational ability and follow-through.
  • Must be able to maintain strict protocols of all confidential or sensitive information.
