Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Clinical Reviewer (MBSCR) (Full-Time)

The MBSCR’s key responsibility is to collect and submit accurate, complete, and timely data to the MBSAQIP Registry. This task is accomplished through high-quality data compilation, documentation, and entry of 100 percent of metabolic and bariatric procedures performed at the center into the MBSAQIP Registry.

Position Summary:

The Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Clinical Reviewer (MBSCR) will abstract and submit data to the American college of Surgeons Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program database. The MBSCR’s key responsibility is to collect and submit accurate, complete and timely data to the MBSAQIP Registry. This is accomplished through high quality data compilation, documentation and entry of 100% of metabolic and bariatric procedures. In addition the MBSCR works closely with the members of the metabolic, bariatric and general surgery departments to identify opportunities for quality improvement and other special projects that may be identified.

Essential Responsibilities/Duties:

Successfully completes the online MBSCR Training Program and annual recertification

Knowledge of medical terminology, basic anatomy, and physiology and disease process is required

Responsible for the accurate, complete and timely entry of data into the MBSAQIP Registry

Collects 100% of patients for inclusion including pre-operative, intraoperative, 30 day post-operative, and long term follow-up data components for the program through effective utilization of the hospital medical record systems and through a coordinated effort with the individual surgeons and staff.

Demonstrates appropriate utilization of resources necessary to obtain valid, reliable data for entry into the MBSAQIP Registry

Utilizes software applications for data collection and analysis

Participates in data compilation for audits and re accreditation or site visits

Periodically attends voluntary in-person professional development seminars offered at annual meetings.

Establishes effective working relationships with members of the hospital community, especially staff in the surgery, medicine, nursing, medical records, and information systems departments that is necessary for the management and success of the program

Identifies streamlining and process improvement opportunities in the data collection process

Quality Improvement and patient safety knowledge and experience is preferred

Ability to interact with all members of the bariatric surgical team and administrative staff in a professional and courteous manner

Job Requirements

Education   RN, BSN, PA or NP degree preferred or equivalent degree

Licensed in Massachusetts as a registered nurse, Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner


Clinical knowledge Data collection and identification of opportunities for improvement requires surgical clinical knowledge and an understanding of patient care and quality improvement

Knowledge and skills:

Ability to learn and utilize new software and Web applications for data entry and report generation

Computer knowledge for chart review and abstraction

Computer and Internet skills familiarity and comfort with (Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc.)

Database data management experience preferred
